What can these be used for?

These textures give scenery creators an excellent starting base for creating their own unique terrain textures and sceneries.  You can easily create all types of brand new custom terrain textures by simply combining bits and pieces of these base textures in your favorite paint program.  Each texture is designed to work well with the others so creating your own terrain styles is a snap.

Here's an example of different textures used to make a brand new one.  As you'll see in the example, the large majority of the textures do not have any roads in them.  This is entirely by design as it allows your geo placement software to use its own road information for road, highway, and other transport placement (or you can create your own roads by painting them directly into your finished textures).

For those people familiar with TerraScene2*, you'll be able to drop these into the texture folder as is and use them like any other custom texture.  If you need a full set of generic land cover textures for game development, scenery creation, simulation, etc. then this is the package you're looking for.
Two styles of texture included in this package:
North American

North American Style (172 texture plates)
Perfect for sceneries with a North American feel, but the majority are generic enough to be used anywhere in the world.  Included are many variations of farmland, residential areas, forests, mountains, desert, and more.  Several night lighting textures are included as well.

How this set was created...

Each texture in the set was digitally hand painted by our artists here at How in the World, using aerial imagery and satellite photos as a base reference.  These are not, however, aerial photographs, meaning that you won't have to deal with washed out color, inconsistent lighting, non-ortho-corrected views, etc.  The textures are specially created to easily blend together to help you create your own unique combinations and land types.  You will not find a package like this anywhere else.

Please note:  Every texture in this package is different, but you will definitely see strong similarities among certain groups of them, mostly in the forest styles.  This is intentional and allows for varying land types to blend together in one area without looking unnatural.

* What's this about TerraScene?

These textures were originally released for use with the TerraScene2 Scenery Generation System (by Todd Klaus and How in the World).  After a short period of time they were taken down from public download due to some companies using the textures for commercial products without permission.

It has been over 2 years since that time and the textures have not been available to the public.  We're happy to say that we have finally been able to devise a method where we can make these textures available again to the general scenery enthusiast.

If you still have the original set, please note that we have reworked and color corrected the entire set of textures for this new release, as well as included some textures not originally available, so there are differences between the original and this new set.
